Yami Gautam to play lead based on Shah Bano case?

The landmark 1985 Supreme Court case Mohd. Ahmad Khan vs Shah Bano Begum is set to be adapted into a motion picture, with actress Yami Gautam portraying Shah Bano Begum.

The case, which sparked nationwide debates on women’s rights and religious laws, revolved around Shah Bano, a 62-year-old Muslim woman who petitioned for maintenance under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code after being divorced through triple talaq in 1978. The case concluded in a historic ruling by the Supreme Court in Shah Bano’s favor in April 1985, despite opposition citing Muslim Personal Law.

Produced by Junglee Pictures in collaboration with Vishal Gurnani and Juhi Parekh Mehta (of Insomnia Media) and Harman Baweja (Baweja Studios), the film will be directed by Suparn Varma, known for acclaimed web series like ‘The Family Man Season 2’ and ‘The Trial’. The screenplay, penned by Reshu Nath, is inspired by an unpublished book by Jigna Vora, whose previous memoir inspired Netflix’s ‘Scoop’ series.

Yami Gautam, fresh off the success of ‘Article 370’, is thrilled to bring this powerful story to life. This marks her first project after welcoming her child in May 2024. The actress has already begun preparing for the challenging role and looks forward to returning to the set.
